Cool-Hand David
Medellin’s InForma Models’ Juan David Loaiza new shots in my studio last week. David responds beautifully to direction, and we ended up with 20 terrific shots in an afternoon of shooting. I continue to explore the possibility of depicting men as no-frills, shoot-from-the-hip, straight-up Joes. I approached David about updating his book after taking a snap-shot of him at the Shock [music] Magazine Anniversary party a couple of weeks ago and finding him subdued and suave in that exotic South-American manner so warped into cheap stereotype by media here, or elsewhere. David exudes a calm that beguiles depth and a reserved smile that conveys easy honesty. I envisioned him with two distinct personalities in the same man: the I-go-to-work-at-the office-in-my-suite-and-tie Joe, and the I-am-ready-to-unwind-and-live-the-night-as-it-comes-South-American-style Joe.
